1B: Small Community Structure
Project 1B is about exploring how materials shape both function and user experience. Students will design a small structure that highlights form, construction, and material choices while serving a specific community activity. The ideas developed here will later guide the design for Project 1C.

In Project 1B, our team set out to design a shelter that acts as a vibrant pause between the buzzing life of the park and the upcoming P1C site. We didn’t overload it with programmes. Our aim was to create a calming, flexible space where people could slow down, connect, and enjoy the view. The modular, multilevel form and interactive façade were key in making the structure inviting, with foldable coloured polycarbonate louvres that play with light, wind, and openness. We wanted it to feel like a small “portal” into the next part of the park, so we included pods for sitting, a mini library for quiet moments, and plenty of shaded spots
Starting Project 1B was a whirlwind. At the time, we were still deep into our P1A site analysis, and having only three weeks to design and finalise a small community structure felt overwhelming especially while juggling submissions for other modules. In the early stages, I couldn’t contribute as much because I had to complete a video project for another module. I’m genuinely grateful for my amazing teammates, who were so considerate and told me not to stress over P1B for the moment, reassuring me that they had things covered. By our second meeting, I wanted to make up for it, so I sketched out a floor plan that the team ended up choosing and developing further. From that point on, I gave my full commitment—especially during the model-making stage, where I handled almost everything. Seeing “THREAD” come to life and knowing the part I played, alongside such supportive teammates, made me proud of both the outcome and the collaborative process that got us there.
