THE (SITE) CHRONICLE + VISCERAL

A Recce of the Site (& Its Vicinity) + A Synchronisation of Place + Experience

The project focused on immersing ourselves in the site's context and content to develop design solutions that were responsive, sustainable, and culturally sensitive. Through analyzing site characteristics, students were guided to identify themes and design approaches that would influence the final project (P1C), which aimed to foster a connection between people and their environment while celebrating diversity.

The project brief emphasized the importance of engaging with the sense of place, requiring an in-depth analysis of the site as a starting point for architectural solutions. This journey required both the precision of quantitative measurements and the poetry of qualitative insights, considering not just the physical form, but the pulse of the community, the spirit of its culture, the flow of its activities, and the whispers of history that define its identity.

Our site was nestled in a developing reclaimed land area, adjacent to the iconic Encore Melaka Theatre. We were tasked with attuning ourselves to both the tangible and intangible elements of the place, allowing them to guide the design of a poetic Dance Annexe, an architectural response that resonates with the heartbeat of its surroundings.

After site analysis, our group was tasked with incorporating information about the Kristang community and our embodied experiences. We engaged in a synchronization process to capture our observations, understanding, and bodily awareness, which were then expressed through diagrammatic, pictorial, mapping, and visual representations, culminating in a visceral board.
Reflection:
The last time I worked on a project of this scale was during my first semester with the Bamboo Project. Coming into this project, I was part of the modeling team. Most of our work was done off-site, meaning we started model-making back on campus.
I felt overwhelmed at first, unsure of our group dynamic and the abilities of each member. Communication mainly happened through WhatsApp, but the downside was that some members became less responsive and inactive. However, whenever our leader called us together, everyone showed up and worked diligently to complete the 1:100 site model. This was our first experience creating a large-scale site model, and I can still remember the strong scent of wood glue filling the studio and the lively energy as the submission deadline approached. Despite the numerous challenges we faced, we managed to overcome them and finish before the deadline.

Not to forget, during the completion of this model, I was also juggling the visceral board assignment. In the end, everything came together, and I’m grateful to have had such an understanding groupmate who made the process smoother.
