GREEN BUILDINGS IN MALAYSIA

Green buildings are increasingly popular among architects and developers who prioritize environmental concerns in their projects. However, despite their ability to improve energy efficiency and provide healthier living and working spaces, these buildings still lack the recognition they deserve in public opinion and media. Nonetheless, decarbonizing our built environment and minimizing the impact of buildings on our surroundings are crucial steps in combating global climate change. To enhance awareness and garner more public acknowledgment regarding the significance of green buildings in addressing climate change, we create an infographic board featuring our selected building.

Reflection

For this project, we analyzed Ganendra Art House in Petaling Jaya, which has been honored with green building awards. In 2011, it won the PAM Architects Excellence Award and became the second building in Malaysia to receive Green Building Index certification for Residential New Construction, ranking sixth overall. Over five weeks of conducting this case study, we gathered valuable insights into passive design strategies that I can implement in the future. The architectural design of a gallery can subtly craft a comfortable environment for viewers to appreciate artwork, evident in the spatial poetics deeply ingrained within the Shalini Ganendra Art Gallery. This is noticeable both in its interior and exterior spaces, where environmental design strategies significantly contribute to its ambiance. Exterior elements such as greenery, ventilation blocks, turf ramps, wind tunnels, and concrete finishes play a pivotal role in establishing a sense of serene comfort for visitors even before they enter the art house. Inside, the use of concrete finishes, high Louvre windows, double brick walls, wind tunnels, and ample window openings creates an intriguing atmosphere, reflecting green approaches proposed by architects T.R. Hamzah and Yeang. Additionally, I'm thankful to have my lecturer who guide us a lot along the way. Not to mention, my team members who are very passionate on this project and give their all in this case  study.
